Dear Viking Families,
First I would like you to know we ae thinking about any and all the families that have been impacted by the government shut down. A few of our teachers and service clubs are coordinating a food drive for those in need. If you or someone you love is concerned about securing enough food for your family, please reach out to me or to Ms. Gittens directly.

Dear VAES Families,
VAES and VAMS are sponsoring a “Pennies for Pender County” Coin Drive.  Pender County students are still in need of school items.  Rather than purchase items, as we might not purchase what is needed, we are collecting pennies (other coins and dollars are accepted) this week and next week.  There is a jar in the elementary office and the middle school office for you to drop off any coins/dollars.  Once we complete our drive, we will send a check to Pender County Hurricane Relief Fund. Our donation will be used for their students.  Thanks so much for your support of Pender County students!  The students are very appreciative of what VAES and VAMS are doing to help them!

Dear VAMS Families,

It’s hard to believe we are quickly approaching February.  Our 5th graders completed Round 2 of NC Check Ins. They had reading and math.  The students worked very hard and most of the students used all of their allotted time.  Next week, our 6th graders will complete NC Check Ins and 7th grade will complete Check Ins the first week of February. The Check Ins provide information to teachers regarding individual strengths and areas needing attention, as well as, class period strengths and areas needing attention.  We hear many positive comments from our students. The Check Ins are shorter so the time to test is shortened.

Dear VAES Families,
Don’t forget that this Monday, January 21st is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.  There will be no school for students and staff.  Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday and commemorates the birthday of American Civil Rights leader, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and celebrates his life, achievements, and legacy.  This federal holiday was created in 1983, during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, to honor Dr. King and was first observed in 1986. Some of our teachers may use a wonderful book that we have in our Empathy Read Aloud collection entitled Martin’s Big Words:  The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by Doreen Rappaport as one of their read aloud books.

2nd grade Spelling Bee Champs!

Our second graders in after care have been working hard, preparing for our “After School Spelling Bee!” This was a fun activity that our staff created to help the students become better spellers. After watching the movie “Akeelah and the Bee,” the students were excited and thought it would be a good idea to have a spelling bee of their own! Hats off to Ms Alexis putting this together and encouraging the students to do their best! Below, are the pictures of the spelling bee finalists, and 2nd grade after school spelling bee champion! Way to go!
