Voyager Academy Elementary School News, May 20, 2018

Dear VAES Families,

It’s been a busy week and we have completed all end of year assessments and the third graders also completed the End-of-Grade tests in reading and math.  We now have 4 ½ days left until the summer break! The last day of school, May 25th, is a half day and we will dismiss at 11:15 AM.  Carline will end by 11:40 AM.

As I stated last week, over the summer break, it is extremely important that your children continue to read at least 20 – 30 minutes each day.  Our digital subscriptions to MyON Reading and IXL Math will be active for you to continue to use over the summer, but I am also including some fabulous resources that are offered by the Durham Public Library (click here).

Don’t forget that our Kindergarten and Third Grade Project Celebrations are on Tuesday, May 22!  Also, we will dedicate our “Only One You” Rock Garden located by the front office on Wednesday, May 23 at 1:00 PM.  If you cannot attend the dedication, please stop by to see the beautiful work completed by our students and staff! A BIG Thank You goes out to Mrs. Cortney Morgan for having and sharing the wonderful idea, Mr. Scott Tribotte for assisting in the painting of MANY rocks, and Ms. Karen Hofmann, who created the final amazing design!!

Register to participate in Durham County Library’s Summer Reading School Competition from June 9 – August 11!!  You can log your points for reading online and the school with the most minutes read will win a class STEM kit!!  Here is the link: https://durhamcounty.beanstack.com/reader365

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (click here) is a resource for preschool children ages birth to five who are residents of Durham County.  It is a 60 volume set of books beginning with the children’s classic, The Little Engine That Could™. Each month a new, carefully selected book will be mailed in your child’s name directly to your home. Best of all it is a FREE GIFT! There is no cost or obligation to your family. This resource is only for preschool children ages birth to five who are residents of Durham County. A parent or guardian must completely fill out and submit an official registration form. (Form must be approved and on file with Durham’s Partnership for Children.) Books are mailed to the address listed on the official registration form. If the child’s address changes, you must contact the folks at the address on this card in order to continue receiving books. Eight to ten weeks after your registration form has been received, books will begin arriving at your home and will continue until your child turns five or you move out of Durham County.  Please share this information with family and friends!!!

If you are not a member of the Durham Public Library, here is the link to their borrowing privileges:
They offer numerous programs throughout the summer and school year.  I am attaching several flyers.

Our last VAES staff luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, May 23.  A big thank you to the PTO Hospitality Committee, Kathy Robinson, Susan Barkley, and all of the parents that have made contributions, helped with set up and clean up, and watching classrooms during our staff luncheons this year!!  The PTO Hospitality Committee will celebrate our staff and Memorial Day with a "Summer Salad" themed luncheon! Tasty salads, fresh fruits and veggies and scrumptious sweet treats will be the perfect way to thank our teachers and staff for all their hard work this year!
Please click on the link to review the list and sign up for what you can contribute. Any and all help is appreciated! They also need help with lunch coverage for teacher classrooms, set up, and clean up.

Don’t forget that if you want to write a kind message to our featured staff, please come and take a note card from the bulletin board.
