Voyager Academy Middle School News, Nov. 24, 2019

Hello Middle School Families,
Wow, what a busy week!  We completed our first round of the NC Check Ins.  The students put forth much effort. Our Check Ins will provide our teachers with data that will help them determine areas or skills needing additional support or areas or skills that are strong areas for the students.  Information that we receive will be used during MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) time to provide support or acceleration to our students.

Conference Info
The Middle School Exceptional Children's team attended the 69th annual Exceptional Children's Conference in Greensboro November 21 and 22nd. Mr. Husk, Mrs. Daugherty, Mrs. L. Allen, Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Edler attended sessions on Autism, Academic Interventions, Cognitive Disabilities and Assistive Technology to enable all grade level students to be successful.

National Geographic Geography Bee
The National Geographic Geography Bee has been held at the middle school for the last ten years.  In the fall, a preliminary qualifying test is given to students in grades 4-8 to determine which 10 students will be contestants in the final competition held in late January.  Acceleration sessions are held after school during the months of November, December and January to assist those competing in the final competition and to provide an enrichment opportunity for those who are interested in the field of study.  Mrs. Michele Harris is our Geography Bee sponsor.  The students have already been studying and working with Mrs. Harris.

8th Grade Math Students Hard at Work
Have you ever worked with a team to complete the task of getting out of an Escape Room?  Well, our 8th graders spent time trying to find the code to unlock a key box. I had the pleasure of spending time in Mrs. Higdon's 4th period and I was amazed at the thinking, collaboration, persistence, and knowledge of math skills that I observed.  The students were determined to work through the clues in order to open the box! All of the groups were successful!

Bright Ideas Grant
Mr. Price and Mrs. Miller submitted a project to Bright Ideas in hopes to be selected and to receive funds to provide 6th graders with the opportunity to build a greenhouse.  The application was outstanding and the 6th grade team will build the greenhouse. Bright Ideas invited all the winners to a luncheon. On Friday, Mr. Price and Mrs. Miller had the opportunity to attend the luncheon that was sponsored by Bright Ideas.
