Track and Field Heats Up!

This past weekend VAHS Track and Field team competed at Raven Relays and Multi Championship hosted by Ravenscroft School. In the two day event, athletes competed across 19 events including the sprints/distance, several relays, decathlon and pentathlon. While the thunderstorms put a pause on Saturdays events, multi athletes Evan and Carlos gave a stellar performance. Senior, Evan Green broke the meet record in Javelin throwing 144-06 feet, finishing second in the throwing pentathlon. Freshman, Carlos Green finished 4th overall in his first decathlon appearance while breaking 2 school records and setting the decathlon school record. We had a lot of fun and many school records fell -- 13 to be exact!

Ryan Mottola - 200m 23.5
Eloise Leonard - 800m 2.27
KJ Davis - 800m 2.04
Liz Lalor - 3200m 11.47
Liz, Eloise KJ & Glenn - Mixed 4x400 (under 4 minutes)
Kiera, LeNoira, Daniele & Amaris - 4x100 56.3
Peyton - Discus 60-09 ft
Carlos - 110M Hurdles 17.11
Carlos - Discus 131-10 ft
Evan Green - Javelin 144-06 ft

Some other highlights:
Sybil - 8 second PR in the 800 2.41
Mia - 9 second PR in the 800 3.02
Owen - 7 second PR in 1600 5.12 and 12 second PR in 3200 11.39.

There were other seasonal PRs as well -- too many to mention. Coaches Dan Middleman, Cara Jones and Jim Husk are very proud of the team and looking forward to the Regional Meet on May 13th at Pender High School.

You can support the Track and Field team this weekend at the Spring Fling karaoke booth.

Who stole our beloved Viking Mascot?

How can we use DNA to solve crimes? Ms. Lilly's Biology and Ms. Fortkort's and Ms. Huntington's Forensics classes had a visit from Carol Dannenhoffer, Ph.D. of the UNC DNA Days program. She presented to the students the importance of DNA and how it can be used to solve crimes through a hands-on activity in which the students extracted their own DNA from their saliva. The students learned then how a lab then uses this isolated DNA to solve crimes based on the base pair matches through PCR and generating DNA fingerprints.

Stay Up To The Minute On How Your VAHS Student Is Doing In Each Class

As you know, VAHS uses the learning management system called, Canvas. Learning management systems are used widely in high schools and colleges/universities around the world. Students use Canvas to access course materials, manage an assignment calendar, submit assignments including homework, quizzes, tests, and projects, communicate with teachers, and collaborate with their peers. Canvas is also a multimedia platform, allowing for many different methods of instruction. All grades are posted on Canvas.

One of the great features of Canvas is one that enables a parent/guardian to stay up to the minute with a student’s progress and participation in a class, as a “Parent Observer.” As a Parent Observer, you can also receive email notifications about grades and assignments.

Please click here for instructions on how to log in
as a parent observer on your student’s Canvas account.
