VAHS HISTORY TEACHER, DR. KAREN HAWKINS, AUTHORS NEW BOOK
VAHS social studies teacher, Karen Hawkins (AP US History, AP Research, and American History I) is sharing a family/friends discount with the Voyager community for her newly published book, Everybody's Problem: The War on Poverty in Eastern North Carolina (University Press of Florida, 2017).
Based on her dissertation, it is a story of how local people came together to reduce poverty in their community during the often controversial 1960s and 1970s and whose lessons are just as relevant today as they were when President Johnson first declared a war on poverty. See the flyer below for a synopsis of her book and ordering information. If you would like to peruse through book excerpts and the table of contents, please click here.
There is a deal going on through Dec. 15 for 20-40% off all book titles by using the code (XM17) as seen at the top of the upf.com website (click here).

11th GRADERS RECEIVE FREE ACT EXAM PREP RESOURCES
One of the Voyager Academy School Improvement Plan's goals this year is to increase our ACT scores (the ACT is a state required exam for all 11th graders that factors into the Voyager Academy NC School Report Card).
To help us reach that goal, Voyager Academy is providing all 11th graders access to web-based Tutorials through Apex Learning, to help him/her prepare for the ACT this coming February.
In addition to ACT prep, students may use Tutorials as a resource for homework help, to provide extra practice on topics they may be struggling with, or to accelerate their learning if they are ready for more challenging work.

STUDENTS MUST BRING THEIR DEVICES TO SCHOOL
Voyager Academy requires that every student in grades 7-12 have his or her own laptop for use in school and at home as a part of our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program. Students use their computers extensively for academic purposes. Most software, resources, and services that students utilize are cloud-based and accessible via a modern web browser. Students use Google’s G Suite for office software (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, etc), so Microsoft Office is not required.  Please make sure your student has his/her laptop and charger with him/her at all times.
