THE OUTDOOR CLASSROOM
It is located in the triangle between Hoch House and the High School behind the garage/weight room.  Already Lowes has given money for the garden and the outdoor classroom.   This was put toward mulch and weed barrier.  The 4-H of North Carolina gave another $1,000.00 to put in a sensory garden and purchased a picnic table for us. The students from Mr. Mills’ AP Human Geography and World History classes came out the past two weekends to help build the outdoor classroom.  They have scraped the grass and put down the weed barrier.  Mulch has been purchased with the aid of candy sales (Ms. Nguyen) in the high school.  The mulch has begun to be placed and will soon be finished.  The students have helped remove 3 stumps  and have reclaimed the two tarps that were out there
The week after next, the students will finish the mulch and remove the debris.  Parents have begun to offer help with purchasing the remaining 5 tables to make the outdoor classroom. .  Big thanks go out to Tanner Reo and Family for their donation towards new picnic tables in the outdoor classroom!  Long term goals also include getting wifi there as well.

THE GARDEN
Ms. Nguyen and Mr. Mills ran the Project SERVE project for the students who remained at school last year.  They converted the grass area outside of Hoch House into a garden.  The garden grew peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, lettuce and herbs.  It was   greatly successful for the remainder of the year as Ms. Koerner used it for ingredients in cooking class.  As school has restarted, the garden has wound down and this week is being replanted by Ms. Koerner’s class.

LEUKEMIA AND LYMPHOMA PENNY WARS FUNDRAISER
This week at the high school we have been having Penny Wars.  Each grade has been bringing in pennies and dollars that add to their totals and nickels, dimes, and quarters that take away from other grade level totals.  It has been going so well that we have extended the “war” through next week.  Already students have raised over $200 for Leukemia and Lymphoma research!  Great job Voyager!

AP BIOLOGY & APES FIELD TRIP: OFF TO MARINE QUEST AT CMS IN WILMINGTON!
The AP Biology and APES class are going to be taking an exciting 2 day field trip on Oct 30th and 31st to Wilmington, NC. While there we will be spending the day with the folks at the Center for Marine Sciences at UNCW and taking part in their Marine Quest program. The students will be able to wade in the marsh to collect macroinvertebrate samples, look at the health of the local sea life, go kayaking, tour the facility, and have lunch with the students that run the program. Then on the second day there the students will be touring Fort Fisher Aquarium and UNCW main campus.
The students are VERY excited about this opportunity as are Mr. Ingram and myself. I am currently working to have the orgs.online payment system setup to begin taking payments so please watch for the link by early next week. We will need 3 parent chaperones and will take them on a first come first serve basis.
Please feel free to email me with any questions at chuntington@voyageracademy.net
Thanks!!
