Voyager Academy Middle School News, March 18, 2018

Dear VAMS Families,

Wow, it’s hard to believe that we only have 2 weeks left in the month of March!  Even with this week being a short week, our students have been steadily working on assignments and projects.  Many of you had the opportunity to conference with your child’s teacher(s). If you were unable to meet with the teacher(s) and you feel the need to meet, please send him/her an email with a conference request.

Remembering Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida
On Wednesday, March 14, many students across the nation had the opportunity to display their feelings related to the tragedy at Stoneman Douglas High School.  Schools showed their feelings and thoughts in a variety of ways. Rather than Walkout or protest, we decided to have a gathering where students had the option of attending or the option of remaining  in their class. We had approximately 100 7th and 8th graders meet in the gym.  Annie and Corey led the gathering – first by reading the names of the students and staff who lost their lives, followed by a moment of silence.  After the moment of silence, students who wanted to speak and share their thoughts and feelings were allowed to do so. The students were so thoughtful with their comments and they were extremely respectful of their peers.  What I observed during the 17 minutes was compassion and empathy for families and students they don’t even know. They spoke in a most caring manner. It was a gathering I will never forget. I was very proud of the way our students spoke from the heart and for the way the students who did not speak provided a  trusting environment. Parents, you would have been very proud of our 7th and 8th graders.

Sports
All of our spring sports are now having games, meets, or matches.  Our student athletes work extremely hard to keep their grades to a specific standard, come to school on time, and practice for their sport. Our teams also represent Voyager in a very positive way when their games/matches/meets are away as well as when we play on our home field.  If you would like to watch our athletes in action, the schedule is on the Voyager website. The students appreciate support during the events.
