VAHS Attends Model United Nations Chapel Hill

Last weekend VAHS brought its first Model United Nations delegation to the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill for Model UN Chapel Hill (MUNCH).  Isabella Bunn, representing Switzerland, sat on the European Court Committee. Louis DeFrate representing Italy, sat on the World Bank Committee, Eloise Leonard and Neera Desai representing Germany, sat on the World Health Organization (WHO) Committee.  As part of this simulation, students from all over North Carolina (720 participants) met, caucused, formed blocs, and collaborated as nations to pass UN resolutions to solve topics assigned to each committee.

The WHO Committee, for example, set out to solve the following global problems: Maternal mortality and morbidity; AMR (antimicrobial resistance) and tuberculosis. Both of the resolutions that Germany (Neera and Eloise) sponsored were passed, as Neera co-authored both of these!  As our inaugural group, it was a great start for Voyager at the Model United Nations. We hope that more students will express interest. Any students interested in participating next year should contact Dr. Nolan (faculty sponsor of MUN).
