VAHS National Honor Society Welcomes 37 New Members
Congratulations to our newest National Honor Society members! Today (Oct. 4, 2024) was the VAHS National Honor Society induction ceremony. We saw many proud parents and teachers as we celebrated the hard work and dedication of our NHS members. Congratulations to them and their parents! The Harvest Moon Homecoming Dance
What: VAHS Fall Semi-Formal Dance for grades 9-12
When: Saturday, November 2nd, 7-10pm
Where: Umstead Pines at Willowhaven, 253 Country Club Dr., Durham, NC 27712
Tickets: $20 per ticket and may be purchased through LINQ Connect through Oct 30th
*Non-Voyager students can attend with a Voyager student upon approval. Guest ticket applications can be picked up from the front office or Mrs. Higdon B133 and returned no later than October 25th. If bringing a non-Voyager guest, don't purchase 2 tickets until the guest is approved.

Spanish II Explores Costa Rican Cuisine
This week Ms. Vicéns' Spanish II class explored Costa Rican cuisine by researching dishes and their significance.
The class then chose to prepare Costa Rican "rosquillas", a popular citrus infused doughnut recipe.

CFNC Countdown to College is Coming!
NC Countdown to College (C2C) https://www.cfnc.org/apply-to-college/nc-countdown-to-college/for-students/ is a month-long initiative that kicks off in October. Students are encouraged to complete the following three steps in college enrollment.
1. Residency https://www.ncresidency.org/
2. FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa
3. Free College Application Week ( October 21 to 27, 2024) Several North Carolina colleges and universities waive their application fees

Free College Planning Event
Continuando Mi Camino is a free bilingual (English/Spanish) postsecondary exploration event for middle and high school students and their families. The event (Oct. 26, 12-4pm) is sponsored by the Emily K Center and will feature colleges/universities, community-based organizations, employment opportunities, and guest speakers for participants to start planning for their futures and learn about the resources available to them.
This event is intended to be fully in Spanish/bilingual. Open to anyone in the community, and completely free! Learn more and register Here:

Durham Tech CTE Information Session Reminder
Durham Tech offers both certificate and diploma Pathways of study within the CTE Pathways. All interested students and parent/guardians are invited to attend an Durham Tech. Career and Technical Education Program Presentation at VAHS on Monday Oct. 14 from 2:00-3:00.

VAHS Students: How Would You Like To Be A Journalist?
Any HS student who is interested in a career in Journalism is encouraged to check out the in Elon University Emerging Journalists Program! This is an ideal opportunity for high school students to explore what it means to be a journalist, to report and to produce news that informs communities. Applications are now open, and students may apply for our virtual sessions only or for both the virtual component and the on-campus summer experience, scheduled for June 16-27, 2025, at Elon. This on-campus residential learning workshop is open to students from diverse socio-economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds. The program is completely free. EJP pays for students’ travel, lodging, meals and instructional materials.

Hispanic Heritage Read Alouds By VAHS Students At The Elementary School
This week Ms. Vicéns' Spanish I class visited Mrs. McGregor's Meerkats in the second grade and read a selection of Spanish Children's books. This will help them refine the Spanish children's books they are currently writing.

VAHS Penny Wars Are Back!
Brought to you by the VAHS Service Club…get Ready for the Annual Penny War Fundraiser! This is the annual competition between grade levels to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. All next week, students can participate by contributing dollars and pennies to their grade-level jars, or silver coins to take away money from other grade level jars. Last year the class of 2025 won the war, but which grade level will win the 2024 Penny War? Look for a Service Club member next week with a grade level jar to earn bragging rights for your grade level!
