Dear VAMS Families,
Wow, what a busy week! We had field trips, construction of the 6th grade play set, auditions for Aladdin, Jr., basketball games, snack sale, and LOTS of learning. It was a great week at Voyager Middle School.
Congratulations, Mr. Price!!!! Mr. Price is one of the two finalists for NC Teacher of the Year for Charter Schools. On Monday, Dec. 3, the Teacher of the Year Selection Committee will spend the day at Voyager Middle School. They will spend time in Mr. Price’s classroom, talk with a team of students, meet with a team of parents, and meet with a team of teachers. They will also talk with administration. We know all will go well Monday and wish Mr. Price the very best!
The Scholastic Book Fair is back and will be held from Friday, November 30-Friday, December 7!!! The theme is the Enchanted Forest. Online sales began on Saturday, November 24th and parents could preview for their child, purchase online, and/or build an e-wallet account for their child for the in-school fair (e-wallet information attached). Truly, there is something for everyone at the book fair-from PK to adult!! The PTO also set up a Teacher Wish List board and parents can purchase a special book for their child’s teacher that they can add to their classroom library.
BOOK FAIR CALENDAR:
Sunday, December 2nd from 1:00 pm - 4:00pm: Weekend Family Event. There will be a few food trucks, so you can grab some lunch and shop at the book fair!

Fantastic, sunny, chilly, educational, interactive, memorable - these are all words that describe the 8th grade field trip to the NC Estuarium. What a great day! They spent the day learning about water quality, bioindicators, and the Tar-Pamlico River estuary.
Sixth Grade Play Project
The sixth graders are working on their play project. The students have created the plays, shopped and purchased their costumes and props, created their sets, and are working the lights and sound system. The plays will be presented to parents and our 5th graders on Dec. 6 and Dec. 7 at the Durham Arts Council.
Driving Question -
What would the story be if Greek Gods/Goddesses lived today?
What students will learn -
Learn the process of telling a story, through the format of a play.
Learn the process of producing a play from start to finish.
Learn the process of using research to inform your storytelling.
What students will produce - Students will produce a final play that includes: a final script, marketing, set, props, costumes, and hair and make-up.
Culminating event - The Play Project at the Durham Arts Council.
The Giving Tree - Beginning Tuesday, December 3rd, we will have our “Giving Tree” in the front office of the middle school. On the tree are gift tags for several Voyager families. Each tag has information about the type of gift to be purchased, the child's size, age, and gender. You may select a tag, purchase a gift, and return the unwrapped gift. The tag needs to be taped to the gift. What a great feeling to help others!
Pennies for Pender - During the month of January, we will collect pennies, as well as, other coins for Pender County School District. Once our collection is over, we will cash in the coins and purchase a gift card. The gift card will be sent to the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum so she can purchase supplies that are needed for students and/or teachers.
