Voyager Academy Middle School News, Nov. 10, 2019

Dear VAMS Families,

First, I want to say THANK YOU for making my birthday on Friday a very special one!  The students created a banner and the majority of our students signed it one morning when I was at car line.  I appreciate all the emails, cards, kind words, hugs, delicious Banana Bread, Pumpkin Bread, flowers, lunch and I could go on and on! Your children certainly know how to make one feel special!  Again, thanks!

Our attendance is better as we are having less tardies! Our students start their day on a positive note when they are in the classroom when the teacher begins the day.  Thanks for getting your children to school on time!

Project Based Learning (PBL)
Wow, what an outstanding job our fifth grades did on their most recent project and project celebration!  The students presented their projects to the sharks in hopes to have a deal with at least one of the sharks in order to have funding for their projects. The sharks were tough but the students were well prepared.  It was obvious the students completed the necessary research in order to persuade the sharks to "make a deal" with the students.

NC Check Ins
It's almost time for our first round of NC Check Ins.  Please note the dates below so our students will be at school and we will have little to no make-up assessments.

Monday, Nov. 18 7th grade ELA
Tuesday, Nov. 19    4th grade ELA, 5th grade ELA, 6th grade ELA, 7th grade math, and 8th grade science.
Wednesday, Nov. 20 4th grade math, 5th grade math, 6th grade math, 8th grade ELA
Thursday, Nov. 21 8th grade math
Friday, Nov. 22 5th grade science

These assessments have 20-25 questions and our students have 90 minutes to complete. Most of our students are finished before the time is up.

Mrs. Sawyer’s Needs
Hello Families! My name is Kristin Sawyer I am the elementary music teacher and also the middle school band/instrumental music teacher. I need your help! The middle school band is in need of a drum set. The electronic set that we were using has broken and I have 2 drummers that are having to practice our song on imaginary drums! If you have an electric or regular drum set that you are not using anymore and would like to donate to the middle school, we would greatly appreciate it! If you do not have a drum set, but would like to make a donation towards the purchase of one, that would also be wonderful! You can email me at ksawyer@voyageracademy.net. You can also get in touch with Mrs. Johnson if you have questions or want to make a donation.

Lost and Found
If your child lost a coat, backback, water bottle, sweatshirt, lunch box, shoes, school notebooks, etc. – you might want to stop by school this week to see if you can find the lost items.   Items will be sent to a charitable organization of Tuesday, Nov. 12.

National Junior Honor Society
A couple of you asked about the qualifications for National Junior Honor society.  In order for a 7th grader to qualify for National Junior Honor Society and to be inducted into NJHS in the spring, they must meet several criteria in 7th grade. First, we review core class grades in 7th grade which are Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  Students need at least a 95 on the 4 core class for the first 3 quarters of 7th grade.  We then look at their character, leadership, and service in the community and school.
