Come Join the VAHS Bass Assassins!

It’s that time of year to get dust off your rod and reel and get out there on the water. We would love to be able to start a new season of bass fishing with a few great middle and high school teams (ages 10-18) that would be interested in getting out on the water and fishing for some amazing prizes and some all around fun!. We are also in need of boats and men/women willing to be captains for these teams. If interested please contact Christine Huntington VAHS Bass Assassins Adviser at chuntington@voyageracademy.net

A Cell is like a..... (Project Based Learning in Honors Biology class)

Mrs. Huntington's Biology Honors students showed PBL is alive and well at VAHS even at a distance. We completed our chapter on cells and organelles with our cell analogy project in which we take the organelles of a plant or animal cell and compare it to something in real life to show how the functions are similar. The students achieved this by creating 3-D models of their real life environment and showed the organelle that each item related to. We had a great time presenting these in class and marveling at each others’ creativity. Mrs. Huntington can't wait to share these with everyone! Here are just a few of the amazing examples.

Check out this clip of  last year's cell analogies...

Senior Yearbook Pictures

Usually, female seniors wear the black drape and males wear the tux that is provided by Strawbridge. This is one aspect that differentiates the senior spread from the other class sections in the yearbook.  Sharing these garments is not an option this year, for health reasons,, but many parents want to keep this tradition and consistency.  It would look great for all females to wear the same color or type of top, and for males to have a white dress shirt, but we cannot require anyone to go out and buy something new to wear. After receiving parent and student feedback, requesting a more traditional senior yearbook photo, we would like to offer the following suggestions for dress for senior pictures.

Females- black top (collared, off-the-shoulder, or v-neck). Amazon.com is a great place to start your search, according to feedback from some families.

Males- white button down shirt with tie.

We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion as we navigate these changes to the traditional senior yearbook photo.

Students Must Regularly Check Their Voyager Academy Email Accounts

Voyager Academy High School strives to make all students career and college ready. Good email communication skills are essential for a student to experience that success.

Parents, please remind your students to check their VAHS student emails often. This account is set up so that the staff can readily communicate with the students through a secure server. Also please remind your students to use their VAHS email account when emailing teachers as many times their personal emails do not contain their names or are inappropriate and we do not know who is contacting us in regards to an assignment or question.

"Say Something" - An anonymous reporting system

Dear Voyager Families:

As a school system, we are committed to creating and sustaining a comprehensive, coordinated effort to improve the overall safety and well-being of our students, educators and administrators.

To do this, we believe this must involve community-wide programs and initiatives involving parents, teachers, administrators, local law enforcement, mental health & wellness professionals and elected officials to take meaningful action to protect our students.

I am happy to announce that Voyager Academy Middle and High School will launch the “Say Something Anonymous Reporting System” (SS-ARS).  This program, which fulfills the mandate requirement under 115C-105.51 of NC Law, teaches middle and high students, teachers, and administrators how to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, of individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others and Say Something to a trusted adult OR use its anonymous reporting system. Specifically, the program educates participants to:

•   Recognize the signs and signals of at-risk behaviors – especially within social media

•   Take every sign and signal seriously; act quickly to get help by talking to a trusted adult OR

•   Report it anonymously through SS-ARS 24/7 Crisis Center, mobile app, or website

•   Respond to and manage the submitted tip via multi-disciplinary educator and administrator teams

•   Sustain the curriculum and awareness via student clubs, in-school activities and call-to-action weeks

Our students often are aware of the problems their peers are facing, so we must empower them to know the danger signs and give them the tools to help each other with the assistance of trained and caring adults. As you know, most conversations are taking place on social media, therefore it is critical that we teach our students to be looking out for one another as these digital conversations are taking place. SS-ARS teaches them what to look for in text, video and photos while empowering them to act quickly to help a fellow student.

The SS-ARS program is being provided and sustained at no cost to us through Sandy Hook Promise (SHP), a national non-profit organization. More than 7.5 million students and adults have been trained in their signature, evidence-based Know the Signs programs that includes Say Something Anonymous Reporting System (SS-ARS). They have an exceptional track record, reputation, and level of expertise in working effectively with kids, parents, and teachers to improve school safety and culture.

We anticipate that SS-ARS will help stop school shootings, suicides, and gun threats; it will help reduce bullying and cyberbullying; help intervene upon cutting, drug use, racial conflicts, and other violent and victimization acts.

Voyager Academy High School will be trained on Tuesday, October 6th and Voyager Academy Middle School (6th-8th grade) will be trained on Wednesday, October 7th via an online platform.   If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call or email our school social worker, Cindy Gittens (cgittens@voyageracademy.net / 919-433-3301 ext. 146) and/or your school administrators.
