From the Voyager Academy Managing Director, Nov. 12, 2021

Dear Voyager Community,

What a fabulous week on campus filled with active learning. The National Honor Society (NHS) induction was held on Tuesday night outside under beautiful blue skies. Forty-two new students were inducted into NHS and recognized for their service, leadership, character, and scholarship.  We are so very proud of our Vikings for their achievement!

Voyager strives to make community connections to extend learning beyond the classroom. Our second graders participated in an outdoor environmental field experience hosted by Durham County on the Voyager campus. Our students learned about aquatics, forestry, bats, soil, and landforms from our local Durham County experts from Soil and Water, NC Forest Service, City Water Management, and the EPA.  Our 5th grade Social Studies classes also had a special visitor in honor of Veteran’s Day to share his family’s military service to our country and D-Day experiences.  He traveled to Normandy, France and experienced the cemetery and battlegrounds and shared his videos, photos, and memories with our students.

Thank you to the parents that participated in the Parent Enrichment Night to learn about ADHD, autism, anxiety/depression, ODD/OCD, and specific learning disorders from our student support team. Partnering together we can help all of our students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our students also continue to excel athletically. Congratulations to the men’s soccer team for another awesome win under the lights. Let’s go states!  We also want to recognize and congratulate Voyager swimmer, Ede Kosik. Voyager joined Ede and her family at a signing event to celebrate her commitment to swim next year at UNC Chapel Hill. Go Vikings Go!!

Calendar Updates

The board has reviewed and approved changes to the 20-21 calendar and made the following modifications to support the academic and emotional wellness of our students and staff.  The Thanksgiving holiday has been extended to include November 22nd and November 23rd.  Additionally, February 21, 2022, March 28, 2022, and March 29, 2022 have been converted to asynchronous remote learning days.  Extra time is still built into the calendar if we need to close school due to inclement weather or another emergency. The 22-23 and 23-24 calendars have also been drafted and will be reviewed for approval by the Board at the December meeting.  All calendars are now posted on the school website and can be viewed under the calendar tab linked here.

Cognia Engagement Review

The Cognia Engagement review will be held next week.  Thank you to the many students, staff, and parents that will be participating in the interview process.  A summary of key highlights of the survey results were presented at the last board meeting.  The Cognia results start on slide 11 of the presentation linked here.

Thank you to all the families and staff that participated in the vaccine clinic.  It was a huge success with 600 doses administered.  Thank you for helping keep our school community stay healthy and safe.

Lunch Program

Parent & Student Lunch Survey

Help us understand your child's school meal experience! The information you provide is important to know the direction school meals need to take in order to make your experience better. Please answer the following questions only as they apply to meals offered at the schools. Do not answer for food sent from home or for food purchased and delivered to school from local fast food establishments. There is a section of questions that will require your students' input. This survey is geared to help us improve the food item options (not the vendor), the payment system as well as continue to provide healthy and affordable meal options to all Voyager Academy students.

The survey can be found by clicking this link https://forms.gle/BpMejMeKuVNHZnAm7

Lunch Program

November’s lunch menus are live and ready to take your orders. We’ve added 3 new menu items this month as well as a special holiday dinner on November 23rd. New to the menu in November… Cheese Pizza, Turkey Hot Dogs and Southwest Beef w/ Corn Chips!  Don’t forget to select your students' milk preference (low fat flavored milk or 1% unflavored milk) at check out. Milk is a mandatory component of the meal plan and included in the price.

The lunch ordering rule is a week in advance. You will have until 5pm on Saturday Oct 30th to order for the 1st week of November. We will revert back to the week in advance on Sunday. We recommend parents order for the month, then add funds to your Titan account the week ordered. If you have a negative balance, the system will prompt you to pay before ordering.  There is a $2.80 flat fee charged by the bank per deposit online to Titan. (Example: $100 deposit + $2.80 fee = $102.80) m. You can also pay using A check or money order made payable to Voyager Academy. Please include your child's name and id# on the memo line. If you need assistance email foodnutritionservices@voyageracademy.net.
