From the Voyager Academy Managing Director, Aug. 19, 2022

Dear Voyager Community,

It’s been another action-packed week of learning and excitement on campus at Voyager! High School families were welcomed back to an Open House to walk through their child’s schedule and meet their teachers.  Middle School 7th grade families participated in curriculum night, and our PTSO held their first meeting of the year to welcome new and returning families.

Students and teachers are actively engaged in their learning together this week. At the high school Ms. Lilly’s Biology class has been studying natural selection, adaptation, and evolution. Ms. Nguyen’s Math 1 class was solving equations and expressions and using mental manipulation.  In art, Ms. Clark Stover’s students were creating family portraits in the style of Tim Burton in Art I, while the Art 3 students were creating landscape collages in the style of 5 artists they studied. English 2 was reading the novel, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and completing a close read of the text with discussion.

Ms. Morrow’s 6th graders were learning about character development and dialogue as they read and discussed The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan.  Ms. Harris’s 8th grade social studies class discussed and debated the characteristics of Americans.

Our 3rd graders worked hard to complete the beginning of the year state required reading test assessment which will provide teachers with their baseline reading level. Students in Ms. Rogers kindergarten class were practicing fine motor skills and participating in small reading groups to assess skill level. Ms. McGregor’s second graders were watching a video book, Sammy on Safari by author Jonathon Miller. Mr. Miller will be coming to our elementary school for an author visit with our students later this month.

Our goal is to ensure all students achieve their personal best and grow academically, socially, and emotionally. We also want them to love school and learning. Please continue to encourage and support your children at home and talk with them about what they are learning about and why it is important. Review your child’s work and ensure they submit all of their assignments to demonstrate their understanding so teachers can fully support their growth and success.

We are all here to support your child grow, learn, and find their passion.  Feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher, building administrator, or student support if we can assist your family in any way. Check out the upcoming events and all the updates below from our School Nurse, Student Support Team, Operations Manager, and Athletic Director below.

Have a wonderful weekend!

COVID UPDATE

The health and safety of our students, teachers, staff, and volunteers are our top priorities.  Voyager Academy is following the CDC COVID-19 Community Level guidance. We sincerely appreciate your consideration.

Our CDC COVID-19 Community Level is: HIGH

**Masks are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED indoors, even if you are vaccinated**

As children across North Carolina are heading back to school, and with cases of COVID-19 on the rise again, vaccinations are an important part of back-to-school success and overall health and well-being for students, teachers, staff, families, and our community. Whether children are homeschooled or attend a public, private, charter or religious school, state laws require they stay up to date for certain vaccinations based on their age, as recommended by the CDC.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recognizes August as National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper also proclaimed August as Immunization Awareness Month. Now more than ever it is important to get all recommended vaccines for yourself and your loved ones.

Below you will find the list of State-required immunizations by grade-level. And while not required for school, ALL individuals age 6 months and older are now eligible for COVID-19 vaccination.  If you or your student(s) have already received their initial vaccination series, you may be eligible for a booster dose.  Now is a great time to talk with your family’s healthcare provider about recommended vaccinations. During that same visit, families can talk with their physician about the importance of the COVID-19 vaccine for their children, ages 6 months and older. Many pediatricians and family practitioners will provide the COVID-19 vaccine for all eligible family members during that same visit.

Visit MySpot.nc.gov or contact the North Carolina COVID-19 Vaccine Help Center by phone at 1-888-675-4567 for more information about COVID-19 vaccines.

Supporting Voyager Athletics

How to contribute:

You will want to start by going to the following web address: Family.Titank12.com and you will see to the right where it says “Don’t have an account? Sign up today!”

1.     Once you create your account you will see a green + button to the lower right of the computer screen.  Once you hit that button it should give you an option where you can select “add student”.  It will ask what your district is.  Start to type Voyager Academy and it will automatically populate for you to select.  It should now prompt you to enter your child’s name and their date of birth.

2.      You should now see a box on the screen with your child’s name.  If you want to add a payment method you can go to the top right of the screen, click name, select profile.  Here is where you can add your payment method.

3.      Use the menu on the left to select "Store." This is the future home of all fee payments at Voyager Academy.

4.      Select the Recommended or Custom Athletic Contribution tab. Each tab has a picture of our V logo with Athletics written across it.

5.      Select your student(s) name from the drop down list.

6.      Select the contribution you would like to make.  In the recommended Athletic Contribution tab there are pre-set amounts listed depending on how many sports your child participates in.  In the Custom Athletic Contribution tab you are able to write in the amount you wish to contribute.

7.      Press the add to cart button.

8. A pop up button will appear with the option to continue shopping or view the cart. If you have additional contributions you would like to make, click continue shopping. Otherwise, continue to the cart for payment.

9.  Review your cart before completing your purchase. To delete an item. Click the 3 dots to the right of the item.

Go Vikings, Go!

The Titan Family Portal and LINQ Online Ordering system work together like a checking/ debit card account.  All student lunch accounts must be preloaded with funds for ordering.  Parents then order lunches for students based on the funds availability in their Titan account. Families who have a negative balance on the account will no longer be permitted to order lunch online. Please be sure to send your student(s) to school with lunch if no meal was ordered. If your student's lunch account currently has a negative balance, we please ask that you pay this balance as soon as possible by either form of payment:

  1. Online at  https://family.titank12.com  There is a $2.80 flat fee charged by the bank per deposit online. (Example: $100 deposit + $2.80 fee = $102.80)

  2. A check/ money order made payable to Voyager Academy. Please include your child's name and id# on the memo line. You can also use this pre-printed form

Lunch menus are published for the month of October. The lunch ordering rule is a week in advance. If you need assistance email foodnutritionservices@voyageracademy.net.

MILK SELECTION

  1. Entree' (meal)- Milk is included with every "MEAL PURCHASE" except the Veggie Plate. You select the milk option (White or Chocolate) when you add the milk to the cart. Do not select milk from the A la Carte menu.

  2. A la Carte - These items are priced separately. They are not a part of the Entree purchase. They are not Free and Reduced eligible. You will be charged for each a la carte item ordered. If you ordered an Entree', you do not need to order vegetables under a la carte or milk.

  • Top row are the Entrees (meals) that come with milk included.

  • Bottom row are a la carte items (veggie plate & milk only without a meal). They are ordered seperately from a meal and charged to the students account.

Voyager Academy Food Pantry Donations

Last year, with the help of many generous and considerate donors, the Student Support Services Team was able to create and open Voyager's Food Pantry in order to support  students who have ongoing food insecurities. While we do have some funds remaining from those thoughtful donations, we do not have enough to sustain the Pantry for the entirety of this academic year; thus, the Student Support Services Team is respectfully requesting donations to continue to support and sustain our Food Pantry for our students who experience this hardship. Non-perishable food donations and/or donations of gift cards to grocery stores are GREATLY appreciated! Any contribution size or amount is truly impactful and absolutely makes a difference! For questions or to provide a donation, please contact Dr. Monique Link, School Social Worker at 919-433-3301 X 146 mlink@voyageracademy.net Thank you SO much for considering this request to the benefit of our students!

Parent Enrichment Night 22-23

Be on the lookout!!The Student Support Services Team will be connecting with our wonderful families and staff in the near future in order to get input and feedback, so that we can plan our Parent Enrichment Night sessions for this academic year. Last year, we offered a variety of session topics and we hope to provide our families and staff with a variety of exciting and meaningful content this year as well! Feel free to review some of the previous session content at our Student Support Services webpage: https://voyagercounseling.wixsite.com/home (scroll down about half-way). Be on the lookout in the near future for a quick survey to help us plan this wonderful event. GREAT things are in store for you this year!

Transition to 9-8-8 is Complete

As of July 16, 2022, 9-8-8 has become the national three-digit dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, replacing the widely known phone number 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Individuals can talk, chat, or text with trained call center staff 24-hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year!
