VAHS STUDENTS DO SPRING BREAK IN COSTA RICA!

Hey Voyager Family! Spring Break 2018 was a blast. Four “chicas” and “un professor” took over Costa Rica for 9 Days. Smooth travels landed us in San Jose to get us started on our journey through the Central American amazons of Tortuguero, Limón, Costa Rica to the hot drylands of Liberia, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. We traveled through five of the seven provinces that are in CR. Our tour showed us the different climates that exist within one country as well as the biodiversity that CR has to offer. We enjoyed activities like rafting in the Sarapiqui River, Kayaking in Lake Arenal, zip-lining with monkeys, hot springs (mother nature’s natural Jacuzzi), and a tour of the coffee farm where we found the real cacao. It’s safe to say that this self-sustained paradise has left a lasting impression on our students from Voyager. Hope you join us for our next tour to Perú, Spring Break 2019.
¡PURA VIDA, MAE!

VAHS Spanish Teacher

Several VAHS U.S. history students presented their original research projects at the state National History Day regional competition this past Saturday (3/24) at UNC-Greensboro. The region includes Durham, Orange, Wake, Guilford and sixteen other counties in the Piedmont. Students at Voyager had the opportunity to conduct much of their primary and secondary research at the Duke University Perkins/Bostock library. Each year more than half a million students across the nation present their projects at regional, state, and national competitions. https://www.nhd.org//

Honorable mentions included:
-Devan Desai and Madison Miner ("NC's Pearsall Plan to Save Our Schools"--group website category)
-Zach Hibbard and Mason Kosik ("The Texas Revolution"--group website category)

1st place winners included:
-Michael Kariher, Sebastian Diaz, Spencer Corkins, Michael McKenna and Emma -Morton ("Banana Wars"--group exhibit category).

In addition to winning first place in their category, this group was invited to present at the state National History Day competition in Raleigh on April 28. Category winners at the state competition will move on to the national competition at the University of Maryland in May.

CAREER AND COLLEGE PROMISE NEWS: NC STATE AND DURHAM TECH ARE TEAMING UP
An NC State degree can be both accessible and affordable when combined with two years of community college. Students can complete their Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Engineering degrees at Durham Tech and know they are well prepared to succeed in their major at NC State.

Come learn about how Durham Tech and NC State work together to create a seamless transition for transfer students.  Learn also about the Goodnight Scholars Program, which offers a full NC State scholarship to 15 community college transfer students each year. Last year two Durham Tech graduates were awarded this scholarship and are currently studying in NC State’s College of Engineering.

Representatives from both NC State and Durham Tech will be on VAHS campus Wednesday, April 18, at 2:00 in the commons. Parents are welcome to attend. Students should see Ms. O'Kane for a pass to attend this meeting.

HELP NEEDED FOR UPCOMING INTERVIEW PROJECT AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, TUESDAY, APRIL 17TH

The project will give all of Mr. Baker's Personal Finance students the chance to participate in a job interview. Ideal helpers would be real employers who might actually be interested in hiring a high schooler right now or during the summer, but any adult with interviewing experience (or just the free time to volunteer to help us in the middle of the school day) would be very much appreciated! Any adults in the Voyager Family who would be willing and able to help with this Interview Project, please contact Mr. Baker at dbaker@voyageracademy.net.

VIKING NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWS

NHS is excited to announce the launch of our new website! You can access the website from the VAHS homepage or simply click here and bookmark it for future viewing. We are excited to be working with the VAES again to bring back the “Buddy Program” in which the students can work in the classrooms with students and teachers and build lasting relationships. We are getting ready to work with the Ronald McDonald house here in Durham to serve meals to families in April or May. We recently worked with the Woodward family to coordinate the sending of much needed supplies to those affected by the hurricane in Puerto Rico and we would like to thank everyone who donated.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT STUDENT HEALTH

As you may or may not be aware, “vaping” and/or "juuling"(the use of E-cigarettes) has become an unhealthy trend among children and young adults, from middle through high school nationwide.  As the safety and health of our students is a top priority at VAHS, all students received a presentation on Feb. 13th about the effects of this unhealthy activity, as well as the Voyager Academy consequences.

To see the presentation that the students received, please click here.  Parents/guardians are encouraged to reinforce this very important message at home.

As always, thank you so much for your continued support.
