Voyager Academy Middle School News, Nov. 3, 2019

Dear VAMS Families,

Coming to you LIVE from New York City – it’s the Middle School Newsletter!
I wanted to make sure everyone received the middle school newsletter so I took the opportunity to visit the gorgeous New Your City library in order to complete my part of the weekly newsletter. The reason I’m in NY is to cheer on my brother as he is running
In the New York City marathon!

Lost and Found
If your child lost a coat, backback, water bottle, sweatshirt, lunch box, shoes, school notebooks, etc. – you might want to stop by school this week to see if you can find the lost items.  Items are in the hall and you are welcome to come by! Items will be sent to a charitable organization of Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Mrs. Easterly’s Class
I’m not sure who enjoyed the visit to Brookdale Assisted Living Center more ---- the residents of Brookdale or Mrs. Easterly’s 5th grade homeroom students.  The students visited the residents to celebrate Halloween with the residents.  Based on the smiles from the students AND the residents, all enjoyed their time together.  Mrs. Easterly plans to have her students visit Brookdale monthly to bring cheer to the sweet residents.  They receive such joy when students visit! Thanks, Mrs. Easterly and students!

Mrs. Sawyer’s Needs
Hello Families! My name is Kristin Sawyer I am the elementary music teacher and also the middle school band/instrumental music teacher. I need your help! The middle school band is in need of a drum set. The electronic set that we were using has broken and I have 2 drummers that are having to practice our song on imaginary drums! If you have an electric or regular drum set that you are not using anymore and would like to donate to the middle school, we would greatly appreciate it! If you do not have a drum set, but would like to make a donation towards the purchase of one, that would also be wonderful! You can email me at ksawyer@voyageracademy.net. You can also get in touch with Mrs. Johnson if you have questions or want to make a donation.

Voyager Science Olympiad Elementary (K-5th) Competition Team
Does your student love science? The Voyager SO tournament team is a great opportunity to further their knowledge in science, technology and engineering. Students in kindergarten through 5th grade are eligible. Registration is open until Nov 6th! Click HERE to register. You’ll find more information about the program and links at the beginning of the registration form. Feel free to email questions to Kristin Jantz at scienceolympiadteama@voyageracademy.net.

Book Fair
The Book Fair  is over! Thanks to all of you who allowed your children to visit the bookfair and to purchase items.  It was terrific seeing all the books purchased and how excited the students were with their new books.

Sports
Fall sports are almost finished!  Our soccer team is playing their first round of the tournament as I am writing the newsletter.  If they win, they will participate in the championship game early next week. Stay tuned for more info!

Volleyball, cross country and tennis have completed their seasons.  Great job, athletes!

Basketball tryouts for both boys and girls are in process.  We should know the 2019-2020 team members early next week. Remember athletes are expected to attend school AND be on time, as well as, complete their work and have average to above average grades.

National Junior Honor Society
A couple of you asked about the qualifications for National Junior Honor society.  In order for a 7th grader to qualify for National Junior Honor Society and to be inducted into NJHS in the spring, they must meet several criteria in 7th grade. First, we review core class grades in 7th grade which are Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  Students need at least a 95 on the 4 core class for the first 3 quarters of 7th grade.  We then look at their character, leadership, and service in the community and school.
