Welcome Back To School Assembly:  K-3 is off to a great start and we are ready to celebrate our new school year.  All K-3 students are invited to a “WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL ASSEMBLY” on Thursday, September 3 at 8:00 am.  Instead of going to your class morning meeting, you will join Mr. Manning for a K-3 Zoom event. What will we do?  So glad you asked?  Mr. Manning and Ms. Graves have prepared a welcome back to school rap for you!  Mrs. Meckes wants to share 5 cool tips you need to know in order to have an amazing year and then Mrs. Pearson is going to host a LIVE WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL DANCE PARTY!!!  Get your dancing shoes on and join us on September 3 at 8:00 am.  The link for this event will be sent to every student through their classroom teacher.

Labor Day:  Labor Day is scheduled for Sept. 7 and we are out of school for the day. Labor Day is a public holiday designed to honor the working people of our country.  It was declared a national holiday in 1894.

Kindergarten Curriculum Night:  Our kindergarten team is ready to host its annual CURRICULUM NIGHT on September 10 at 5:15 pm.  The classroom teachers will invite all parents to come and receive highlights of some of the amazing things your students will learn this year.  You do not want to miss this event. Mr. Manning and Mrs. Schollmeyer will be greeting all of the kindergarten parents at 5:00 pm.

Grandparents and Grand Friends Day:  Our students have been working diligently to honor our grandparents and grand friends.  This fun and educational event will take place on Friday, Sept. 11 during your child’s morning meeting time.  Remember, National Grandparents Day is Sunday, September 13.

VAES Welcomes Ms. Vines:  Oliva Vines is ecstatic to be interning with the Voyager Academy Elementary Team! She is a senior at the University of North Carolina, hailing all the way from Austin, Texas. She is majoring in Human Development and Family Studies and has plans to complete her Masters of Arts in Teaching for Elementary Education. Olivia is looking forward to getting to know and work with your young learners this semester. In addition to completing classroom observations and small group work, she will be creating resources to help families thrive during this period of virtual learning.  Please join me in welcoming Ms. Vines to our team!

Way to Go 3rd Graders: The 3rd graders at Voyager Academy are simply the best!  They were able to come to school on August 25 and 26 and complete the Beginning of Year State Assessment.  The students were so confident and happy as they followed all CDC guidelines while completing their tests.  Thank you to all the parents and family members who partnered with us to complete this project.

K-3 Show and Tell: The school counselors at Voyager are planning to host special social events for our students every month.  This month the event is Show and Tell.  It will take place at 2:45 on September 3rd.  If your child would like to participate in this after school social event, they need to register and then the link will be sent to them.  To register for Show and Tell, please click on the link below.  You must register by the end of the day on Friday, August 28.

Highlights From The Classroom:  Last week on Monday  Mrs. Owens second grade read a story called, The Invisible Boy.  In the story, a new student eats Bulgogi and some of the students teased him.  He then explains what Bulgogi is to his classmates and soon the students learn that being different is cool.  On Wednesday last week, second grade  traveled to Korea and learned all about Bulgogi.  They even watched a video on how it is made and read a nonfiction article.  Many students got inspired! Several of Mrs. Owens’ students asked their parents to make Bulgogi.  The kids and parents have been texting and emailing with such excitement over this Korean dish!  They all love it!

Kindergarten students are already learning new sight/tricky words during their morning meeting.  Students have been, “searching out” words that they have learned, and they are learning a new word each day.  Students are also learning how to say hello in different languages.

Teachers are enjoying working with students during remote small group instruction.  Teachers are getting to know their students, and they are able to individualize student instruction based on their learning needs.  Teachers are learning how to support students' gifts, learning goals, and academic challenges.

A Great Big Thank You Teacher Assistants!!  Thank you for all your support and hard work.  We had several teacher assistants help with the BOG testing this week.  We really needed the extra hands. They have also been Zooming with classes to help with small group instruction, and helping prepare our building so we are ready when it's time to return to school.  We wouldn’t be able to prepare weekly learning packets for our students without their help.  Teacher Assistants, you are appreciated!!!

A Special Word From Mrs. Graves:  Parents, thank you for your understanding as we work to make remote learning a success for all students.  We know that your daily routines have had to change, and that you are adjusting to all of the expectations of remote learning.  We appreciate your efforts.  Communication is very important during this time. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We are here to help.
