Voyager Academy Middle School News, Sept. 25, 2020

Hello Middle School Parents,

It’s been another great week at Voyager Middle School.  The teachers are creating terrific lessons for our students and based on what I have observed, the students are enjoying the lessons.  It’s been fun dropping in and out of classes.  Thank you for all the positive feedback you are sending our way regarding what a great job our teachers are doing and for your support of our schedule change.

From Mrs. Farrish, our fabulous counselor:    New Student Lunch Bunch-  Mrs. Farrish is inviting our new students to join her for lunch on Oct. 1 at 12:10.  The students should have received an email from Mrs. Farrish with info that the students need.  Of course this will be remote but the time will provide a quick :”getting to know you activity” and  Mrs. Farrish will share a Voyager slideshow.

Voyager’s Science Olympiad Program:    Science Olympiad is a program at Voyager where a team of students compete with partners in different science events against other schools.  Voyager has teams at all levels: elementary, middle & high school. We start preparing for these events in the fall and compete in the spring.  If your student is interested in participating and would like to learn more about this year’s program, please complete this INTEREST FORM. We’ll be sending out more specifics about the program soon, in addition to scheduling some zoom info sessions. We are also looking for an elementary coach for this year. If you are interested in helping coach the elementary team, or any of our teams, please email KristinJantz  at scienceolympiad@voyageracademy.net.

From Mrs. Copley, 7th Grade Science Teacher:     7th grade packets will be ready for pickup anytime between Friday-Sunday of this week. They will be organized by student’s  name.  The individual bags are in the containers at the gym doors at the back of the school. Your student will need these materials for class starting Monday, September 28th. Thanks so much for coming to pick up the packets.

From Mrs. Graham and Mrs. Higdon:     We are writing to inform you that another set of materials for 8th graders will be available to collect  on Friday, September 25 at the back of the middle school by the gym doors.  Please look for the bin marked "8th grade" and select the folder(s) with your student's name on it.  A small science kit is also available - one per student. Thanks so much.  If you have questions please let us know.

Periodic Table Projects Created by 8th Graders:       Eighth graders are working diligently on their periodic table projects.  This project is due any time between September 30 - October 2.  If your student is creating a poster, these need to be delivered to the middle school during this collection period.  The front office is available to collect projects from 8 am to 3 pm each day. Please ensure that your student's first and last name is on the poster. If you need to deliver a project earlier than 8 am or later than 3 pm, please contact me directly (kgraham@voyageracademy.net) so that I can accommodate you.

Students who are creating digital versions of their project will submit their projects online.  They do not need to print a hard copy of the project, but may submit a hard copy if they prefer this option. Thanks so much! I look forward to seeing the projects our students have created.  Katherine Graham

From Mrs. Johnson:   Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 30, Wednesdays will be dedicated to meeting individualized student needs. Wednesday will not have any required full class zoom lessons.  Instead, teachers will provide remote learning on Wednesdays through a variety of instructional strategies including; recorded lessons, individual or small group zoom lessons for remediation or enrichment, and be available for scheduled office hours to support students and families. This allows our students on Wednesday to learn at their own pace and reduce their live on-screen time.  This also allows students to complete any missing assignments, work on new assignments and projects, and explore other areas of interest. Wednesdays are being dedicated to support what students need most that day and it will be different for each student. Completion and submission of assignments will count as student attendance on Wednesdays.

Helpful Tips for Remote Learning:

Helpful tips have been created to help make remote learning as successful as possible.  We hope you will take the time to talk about these tips with your student.

  1.  Establish a daily routine to be prepared for the learning experience (wake-up, dressed, eat breakfast and then begin instruction, lunch break, etc.).

  2.  Identify a good working space, at home, where you can work effectively.

  3.  TAKE SCREEN BREAKS AND DO SOMETHING ACTIVE!

  4.  Engage in all learning with academic honesty and best effort.

  5.  Be prepared to listen and learn by having all needed materials.

  6.  Make sure your computer is charged.

  7.  Ask questions in the chat.

  8.  Take pride in completing all assignments and submitting them on time.
