Dear Voyager Community,
It’s been another action packed week here on campus. Our students and staff are working well together on their learning goals during the first quarter. The student support team are another resource dedicated to helping our students grow socially and emotionally. They have planned an important parent enrichment night so that you can get to know the team, understand how they can support your child, and share important information about suicide awareness. The Parent Night will be held remotely on September 15th. Additional details are below the newsletter.
As you know we are doing all we can to keep our school community safe as the COVID cases in the Durham community increase. Research shows that vaccination is our best protection against the COVID virus. To date, only 49% of our eligible students 12 and older are vaccinated. Please consider having your child vaccinated to protect them from contracting COVID. Masking and surveillance testing are additional measures implemented at the school to mitigate the spread in our school. Thank you to the many families that have signed their children up for surveillance screening. Please reach out to our school nurse if you want your child to participate.
Research has shown that athletes are at a higher risk for contracting and spreading COVID because of their close contact. This week the Board held a special board meeting to review the COVID surveillance testing proposal for student athletes. The Duke ABC Science Collaborative shared their research and expertise and the school shared additional data and a recommendation to keep our school community safe. After a thorough review of all materials and discussion the Board voted to require all student athletes to participate in the weekly COVID surveillance testing process using the school provided tests or demonstrate proof of negative PCR test from their health care provider on the day selected to be randomly tested. Presentations that were shared are linked below along with a CNN article from Thursday on the topic.
Our elementary students, staff, and families celebrated Grandparents and Grand Friends Day on Friday. The video of our students singing is priceless. Enjoy watching the video below.

Friday, September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is the 2nd leading
cause of death for young people between the ages of 10 to 24. Below are just a few simple ways that caring adults can help make a difference because MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS.
- Listen with empathy and provide support: A fight or a breakup might not seem like a big deal, but for a young person it can feel immense. Minimizing what your child or friend is going through may increase their sense of hopelessness. Listen carefully and acknowledge their feelings.
- Learn the warning signs: Sometimes individuals may say things, other times changes in behavior can show that someone is struggling. Click here Know the Warning Signs.
- Take the person seriously: If your child, friend, or family member confides thoughts of suicide, believe them and get help. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255 is available 24/7 or call 911.
