Viking Weekly News

January 6, 2023

Dear Voyager Community,

Happy New Year to our Voyager family!! I hope you were all surrounded over the holidays with your family and friends and enjoyed the winter break together. We are thrilled to have all our students and staff back on campus kicking off the start of the next marking period.

Teachers and staff were on campus on Wednesday preparing for the return of our students. As I’ve shared before student safety and emergency preparations are always a top priority. Our emergency response team also held a drill on Wednesday as part of our training and emergency preparedness.  I want to reassure our parents that Voyager has a thorough Emergency Action Plan as well as a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan. AED’s are located in each of our school buildings as well as the turf field. We have over 30 staff members across campus that are CPR trained and ready to respond to an emergency.

Voyager Academy is the first school in Durham to receive the Heart Safe School distinction from Project ADAM!

In light of the recent incident that occurred during this week’s Monday Night NFL football game, awareness of sudden cardiac emergencies has been brought to the forefront of many people’s minds. Project ADAM began in 1999 after the death of Adam Lemel, a 17-year-old Whitefish Bay, WI, high school student who collapsed and died while playing basketball. Adam suffered a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), in which ventricular fibrillation occurred, a condition in which the ventricles cannot pump blood into the body. Defibrillation, or an AED, could have saved his life.

Adam’s parents collaborated with Children’s Hospital Wisconsin to create this program in

Adam’s memory. Today, there are more than 30 affiliate children’s hospitals unified in their

mission to provide comprehensive and sustained Heart Safe School programming across the

country.

Voyager parent, and Duke cardiac nurse, Leigh Pederson has been working with our school over the year to have Voyager certified as a Heart Safe School.  I’m proud to share that Voyager is

the first school in Durham to receive the Heart Safe School distinction from Project ADAM!

Voyager Academy was awarded the Heart Safe School distinction on January 4th from Project ADAM and affiliate partner Duke Children’s Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center. Voyager has been working diligently with the team at Duke Children’s and Project ADAM over the past year to design and implement CPR and AED training for teachers, coaches and staff, as well as developing emergency action plan preparedness for sudden cardiac arrest.  A school with Project ADAM Heart Safe School distinction has successfully implemented a quality sudden cardiac arrest program of awareness, training, and effective emergency response in an effort to promote a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors.

A huge thank you to our amazing Voyager teachers, staff, and administrators that participated in

our certification practice drill on January 4, 2023.  And a special shout out to our staff that

obtained or renewed their AED/CPR certifications. Each building now has at least 10 teachers

or staff members trained and certified to perform CPR and ALL of our in-season sports coaches

hold active CPR certifications! Special thanks to Chelsea Skoff, school nurse, and Voyager parent and Duke nurse, Leigh Pederson, as well as Leslie Pace, Danielle Sturkey, and Dr. Salim Idriss at Duke Children’s for your support and partnership!

School Attendance Matters: We love having your children at school all school year; unfortunately, winter weather can take a toll on school attendance. Snow and rain can make it hard to get your children to school, as can illnesses such as colds, flu, fevers, earaches and Covid-19. These absences, even if they are excused, break the routine of daily attendance that contributes to students feeling connected and engaged in learning. Please consider these steps to keep your children healthy and in school this winter: Promoting Good Attendance all Winter Long. If you need any support around attendance and/or want to brainstorm additional ways to ensure that your children are present and on-time each day, please feel free to reach out to your building Administrator or any member of the Student Support Services Team:

  • Dr. Monique Link, School Social Worker: K-12, 919-433-3301 X 146

National Human Trafficking Awareness Month: January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month. The U.S. Department of State defines human trafficking as a crime in which traffickers exploit and profit at the expense of adults or children by compelling them to perform labor or engage in commercial sex acts. NC ranks 9th in the nation with 260 human trafficking cases in 2020. Human trafficking is one of the fastest growing crimes in the US and a serious issue impacting NC. January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Show your support by wearing blue and taking pictures using the hashtag: #WEARBLUEDAY.
