Voyager Academy Elementary School News, March 17, 2023

NEWS FROM ELEMENTARY:  Welcome to the month of March.  We hope you and your family enjoy our getting ready for a beautiful spring season. The following announcements will be helpful for you and your family for the week of March 20-24

HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY:  On behalf of the students and staff at Voyager Academy, we wanted to wish all of you a happy St. Patrick’s Day!

STEM WEEK IS NEXT WEEK:  We are so excited that our students will experience STEM week March 20-24.  The students will be working on a variety of science activities throughout the week and have a Science Extravaganza on Friday, March 24 where each student will participate in a variety of science stations.  The students are also conducting cars (out of water bottles) and on Friday we will determine which class has the best car design that will go the longest distance.  Be sure to ask your student about the great things they learn during this week of science.  Thank you to all of you who donated funds, supplies and time for us to pull off this great week.  We appreciate you.

REMOTE DAYS COMING:  Voyager students will be learning from home on March 27-28.  Please mark your calendars now.  Teachers will send home review work for students to complete independently.

EXPLORING THE SOLAR SYSTEM: The third-grade project was on the solar system. They visited the Morehead Planetarium for their field experience. Each group became experts in different areas of the solar system.  Then they created games to engage and teach the first-grade students about the solar system.  The third-graders enjoyed teaching the first-graders and the first-graders had fun playing the games.

DIG DEEP INTO READING:  Voyager will be highlighting the importance of reading by hosting a DIG DEEP INTO READING event the week of April 3-6.  Our students will experience the joy of reading as we focus on an ocean/beach reading theme.  We plan to have many great events that week, including a guest author visit and Jessie the therapy dog will visit each class during a special read aloud time.  How can you help?  Read with your child every single day and remind them of the joy of reading.

FIRST GRADE VOLUNTEER RESEARCHERS:  The first graders have been busy researching an animal to "propose to the North Carolina Zoo for a new exhibit." They've learned all about their animal's habitat, adaptations, and interesting facts. They also learned how to write a persuasive letter and created a video for their proposal. Last week, they "submitted their proposals," and the zoo "sent them a message" back! Students received some goodies and an "Official Volunteer Animal Researcher" certificate "from the zoo!"

MARK YOUR CALENDAR:  Field Day will be May 5th.

EOG TESTING:  End of Grade Testing in the areas of Math and Reading (for all 3rd grade students) will take place on May 11 and 12. Mark your calendars now!
