Viking Weekly News

May 12, 2023

Dear Voyager Community,

We had another exciting week on campus as our students and staff finalize all end of the year projects and preparation for exams.

This week we also recognized and celebrated the success of our high school seniors at the Senior Awards breakfast. Students were recognized for department academic and character awards, service club awards, NC Global Language awards, honor societies, service laureate, and Durham Technical Community College pathways completed. It was an honor to hear about all the accomplishments of our seniors and wish them all the best as they close the chapter on their Voyager education and plan for their futures in college and careers. Pictured below are photos from the award breakfast, senior class photo, and senior parade across campus.

WEEKLY NURSES UPDATE:

BECOME AN #AllergyAlly

The week of May 14-20th, 2023 is Food Allergy Awareness Week. This is always one of my favorite weeks of the school year because it is an opportunity to share information and valuable resources about food allergies with our entire school community.  Did you know that there are over 32 million people living with potentially life-threatening food allergies, and 5.6 million are children under the age of 18? That’s about 1 in every 13 children, or roughly 2 students in each classroom. Honoring and celebrating National Food Allergy Awareness Week each year is a way to bring people together to show support and raise awareness.

Being a food #AllergyAlly means being a part of a community that supports and uplifts those with food allergies. By showing support and understanding, you help create a more inclusive and compassionate world for all. Simple things like asking parents from your child’s sports team if anyone has a food allergy before providing a team snack or having some allergen-free treats available at your child’s birthday party are little ways that everyone can make a big difference in the lives of children, adults, and families living with food allergies.

Another important (and lifesaving) way that all individuals can become food allergy allies is knowing how to use an EpiPen. You or your child may not ever need one, but there is a chance that you may encounter someone who does or will. EpiPens are simple devices that deliver a dose of a medication called epinephrine. If someone is experiencing a severe allergic reaction, called anaphylaxis, epinephrine is a medication that can help save their life.

Below is a short video that shows an EpiPen and how to use it. There are different brands of epinephrine auto-injectors, but the EpiPen is one of the most well-known. If you know someone with a severe food allergy or severe allergic reaction, it’s a good idea to become familiar with the type of epinephrine auto-injector that they carry with them in case you ever have to help them use it.
